As your body prioritizes core temperature, it sacrifices peripheral comfort and function.
So your hands get colder, your feet get colder, your movement becomes less efficient, and your decision making starts to degrade.
And that brings us to the third type of thermoregulatory debt, which is performance debt.
Now performance debt is where the rubber meets the road, and it's the outcome of disrupted thermoregulation.
Performance debt is the loss of dexterity, ambulatory and motor function, and mental acuity in response to a drop in your body's core temperature.
And when we think about how it happens, it's almost always tied to the accumulation of both the moisture debt and the heat debt that you incurred earlier.
As blood flows away from your extremities, you lose dexterity.
For example, your hands might get cold, so it becomes harder to operate zippers or open food packaging or adjust buckles on your backpack or tie knots or
Light a stove or pitch your shelter, right?
Likewise, as your feet and lower legs get cold, you start to lose some motor function down there, and it becomes harder to walk efficiently.
It becomes harder to maintain your balance or place your feet properly and precisely on a rocky trail, or just keep moving at a pace that's fast enough to stay warm.
Have you ever noticed that when you really get cold, you slow down?
It's just
a natural response to your legs getting colder.
Also, as your body's core temperature drops, your mind slows down.
So you start to get lazy or otherwise make bad decisions because you can't process all the information that's coming in.
So you stop noticing small problems, you may delay adding layers, maybe you're ignoring the need to maintain proper food and water intake, or you choose a bad campsite or pitch your tent poorly.
Maybe you keep hiking when you should start.
stop or you stop when you should keep moving.
This is what makes performance debt a little bit different from moisture debt and heat debt.
