Thermoregulatory problems often begin before they feel like problems.
I want you to remember that.
Sear this into your memory.
I will say it again.
Thermoregulatory problems
often begin before they feel like problems.
So by the time you are cold, clumsy, and slow to make decisions, you are already paying for the choices you made earlier when you were warm, moving efficiently, and still capable of making small adjustments.
Now, the goal here is not to avoid being cold.
It's to manage the system early enough so that cold does not become the controlling variable later.
So pay attention to heat production during movement.
Vent your layers before you start sweating heavily.
Remove or add layers before you feel the urgency to do so.
Protect your insulation from moisture, especially your Hiloft Puffy insulation and your sleeping bag.
Eat before your calorie deficit causes your blood sugar to drop too far, or before that the calories that are in your in your system are no longer keeping you warm.
And recognize that stopping, slowing down, or entering more exposed terrain changes the economics of your clothing system.
So when you encounter these changes of state, really pay attention to what's going on and think about how you are going to feel in 10 minutes if you don't make any adjustments.
The entire point of today's discussion is not to just think
Think about what layers to wear and when you should wear them.
It's about when you make changes and adjustments to your layering system.
It's about how quickly you respond to changing metabolic output, weather, terrain, and exposure.
