And if you can't pay that bill, the cost goes up even faster.
Further, you pay interest, maybe you incur late fees, you lose future purchasing flexibility because you start inching up closer and closer to your credit limit.
And so now you have a situation where a bunch of these small decisions that you've made for one reason or another, instant gratification or convenience or just outright laziness, all these small decisions turn into compounding costs that limit your future financial options.
That's how debt works.
And today I'm making the case that clothing layering in the backcountry can work the same way.
You can make a layering decision during movement that feels okay in the moment.
For example, maybe you're wearing an Alpha Direct Fleece hoodie underneath your waterproof breathable shell while hiking on a cold day.
And then you start climbing up a steep section of trail.
You're still a little chilled, so you keep your jacket zipped up, your hat pulled down, your gloves stay on.
But then after a bit, you start to notice that your hands are warm.
Warming up.
A little bead of sweat is forming on your forehead and your torso starts to warm up.
At this point, you should really stop, take your pack off, and adjust your layers.
But that takes time and effort.
And you know that when you stop, you might want a snack or take a photo and then a rest.
And now a break could cost you 20 minutes of time, which you don't really want to do.
So you see, by not taking care of these layering adjustments, you are enjoying some immediate benefits.
You get to keep moving, you get to save time, you get to keep your pack on.
I make choices like this all the time.
Sometimes it's just because I'm too darn lazy to stop and deal with it.
