And that's what Bernie Sanders said in his statement, is that he also wants to see someone of Plattner's persuasion.

But I also think there's a lot of people rolling their eyes at the idea of a guy who's been accused of rape would have any leverage in this situation.

Just go away.

It's not really clear.

The only thing we know for sure is that the power rests with the Democratic Party of Maine and their executive committee.

So they could theoretically just go into a back room somewhere and come out and say, we've decided that this candidate is going to be our candidate.

My guess is they want to avoid at least the appearance of that.

So some of the candidates that could potentially emerge are suggesting that there be a series of town halls with interested candidates, that they do some sort of a convention where Maine Democrats can actually come in and have their voice be heard, maybe even cast a ballot that would be part of that process.

They would have roughly—depending on when Plattner decided to drop out—

If he waits until the deadline of the 13th, they basically have two weeks to do this process, so it would not be... It'd have to be done in a very, very short amount of time.

But my guess is that what the party leaders don't want is the appearance that they handpick someone that is connected to the establishment and is not part of an operation that's going to come and kind of shake things up in Washington, especially because what Plattner had really tapped into was this angst around party politics.

So...

You know, I could see it going either way for Democrats.

There could be a lot of excitement around it and they rally behind a candidate.

But I wonder if in the back of their minds they're thinking back to what happened with Joe Biden and Kamala Harris where there wasn't that process.

another group of Democrats an opportunity to be a part of that nomination process, and they would like to avoid that.

So they've got a lot of decisions to make.

And I will tell you this, yes, just before we go, I think that there's probably the conventional wisdom is like, well, boy, the person that's really benefiting from this is Susan Collins, right?
