The 529 account, one important side note, is you can change beneficiaries on this.
So if you have a couple of kids and one kid doesn't need their 529, it can be used for other children.
Custodial account is different.
When you put money into a custodial account, it is specifically for that child and it is their money.
Now it can be used for school, and we've seen a lot of clients use it for education, but it doesn't have to be.
So, you know, what one thing we've seen is people actually utilize both, where they utilize a 529 plan and a custodial account.
The 529 plan is used for college expenses, and then the custodial account is a
great tailwind for the child when they graduate college.
It can be used for a down payment for a home, for seed capital, start a business.
It's a great tailwind.
Just the thing that to note is it is the child's money.
So you have to be prepared to release it to them when they turn at the age of 21 in most states.
Really comes down to, you know, what are your living expenses?
What are your living expenses now?
And what do you anticipate your living expenses to be in retirement?
And then it's looking to see, you know, what are the income sources?
Claire, of course, you mentioned Social Security.
Um, you know, we'd ask the question: Are there any pensions involved, any other uh income sources that are coming in?
And then kind of the next thing after that is we have to look at, you know,
the liquid assets, whether it's in the IRAs, taxable accounts, et cetera, to see how can that plug the gap and ultimately, you know, create a roadmap in retirement that takes into account those income sources, any additional funds from the investment portfolio, uh, and then reconciling that with expenses.
