So the Fed's really taking a broad approach to this.
They are looking at all of their rules, not only the liquidity rules, but their capital rules as well, which regulate how much the bank can grow without raising new capital from investors.
And what they're saying is, how do we define where the toughest rules apply?
And there are a lot of cases where the Fed is pretty blunt about that, where there's not a lot of differentiation between, say, a regional bank and a large international bank.
And so...
What we're seeing is the Fed taking a look at that and really potentially making changes that could help some of these smaller regional lenders.
Yeah, that's right.
So the Volcker Rule is another thing on the Trump administration's agenda.
They've proposed changes to it already.
Those came out in May, generated a lot of controversy there.
Even, you know, some of the large banks didn't like aspects of it that they felt would leave the rule very complicated.
And then, of course, you had defenders of the Volcker rule from the left talking about how this would create loopholes that would allow banks to get back to some of the, you know,
crazy proprietary trading practices that predated the financial crisis.
So a lot of controversy around that one as well.
Generally speaking, what that would mean for a bank is that if you had a looser capital rule, you might be able to
do more loans, you might be able to grow in other ways without having that loss absorbing, having as much loss absorbing capital to kind of back up what you're doing, to lever up in other words.
And the real question is where is the Fed going to land on that and how much flexibility are they really going to give the banks?
We had a Fed official testifying in the Senate and he said he feels the level of capital in the banking system is pretty good right now.
While the Fed may be rewriting some of the fine print, it's still unclear what the actual impact of these rule changes is going to be.
Yeah, and you've really hit on what the debate is here.
