Twenty years earlier, on Sunday, March 30, 2003, Sarah Neath drove out to a property at Kaihiti.
She was thirty-two, a mother of three, and she was never seen again.
Not her, not her car, not one trace in all the years since.
and at the center of it one man, Mark Pakenham, told police that Sarah left his house and drove home, and he stuck to that story for six years.
Then, in two thousand nine, he was secretly recorded telling somebody that he had given her a shot of meth and that it had killed her.
Two years later, police sat him down and played it back to him.
He was charged with murder, but for reasons still unknown to this day, that charge was reduced to manslaughter.
He pleaded guilty, but more crucially, said he could not remember what he had done with her body.
Six years and seven months.
Out in 2016.
And now, on the far side of that sentence, he says he made the whole thing up to beat a murder charge that he was framed.
In total, he's told four versions of One Afternoon.
And in every single one of them, Sarah stays exactly where he left her.
Now in season seven of Guilt, I'm joining the search for Sarah.
But this is a story of deception, of legal mystery, of the criminal underworld, and of one retired detective's tireless pursuit of a woman he has never met.
