We're growing an alien intelligence.

We're growing some weird machine intelligence inside of these labs.

And I know there are some people who think that this is just a stupid chatbot that can't think.

And there's other people who think that it's a machine god.

But I do believe that wherever you exist along that spectrum of belief in the model's capability, you have to begin with the idea.

That there's a lot that we don't understand about how these models work, how they work together, what their psychology is, so to speak.

I'm sorry to anthropomorphize for those that are allergic to the idea, but these are generally strange things, which I think should make us open to the possibility that we should regulate them differently than we regulate typical products.

One other thing to call out.

here is that you just read to me a chain of thought and articulated thought, so to speak, of these chatbots that we can read and then analyze and laugh about.

There are some engineers that are worried that

AI technology is going to develop an ability to do these kinds of things, to become misaligned, and to hide.

Those evolutions from their chain of thought, from their articulated thinking.

And so yet another reason why I do have time for people who see AI as something that is quite risky is well, wait, it's it's all it's kind of fun in games, and you can like read the AI, you know, giving itself this sort of zen parable that says they're going to misalign with their engineers, but it's not out of the question that these things.

could begin to act in ways where their motivations, so to speak, um, and their collaborations totally escape our ability to read, literally read what they are doing.

These are huge, huge, big questions.

And let me just start by saying this.

I don't agree with the argument from the antitrust left, and I don't agree with the argument from the all-in crowd, which essentially says that this is just a game for regulatory capture.

But these are not crazy points.

It's not crazy to say that fundamentally what we're dealing with here is a computer.

And we have something called the Computer Fraud and Abuse Act.
