And I remember there's a line somewhere in the Satanic Verses, actually.

There's a minor character of an old lady who says, I know what a ghost is.

It's unfinished business, that's what.

And what I thought is it was a story about unfinished business, a story about somebody who had been grievously wronged and who needed the wrong to be set right.

So I think it's more about justice than revenge.

Not really, because I think revenge is a dangerous thing to get obsessed by because it takes you over.

Yeah.

And my view from the moment I began to recover was that I wanted to look forward, not backwards.

And looking forward meant putting the attack and the attacker out of my head.

So my view is I'm done with him.

You know, I'm interested in the rest of my life.

And this book of stories is the first manifestation of that.

I mean, actually, the day before I arrive in Dublin, I'm going to turn 79.

So at that age, you begin to think about last things.

And of course, yes, you're right that I had a pretty good look at the end of the story.

So all of that was in my mind, you know, and the stories are affected by those things.

But as we've been saying, they're not stories about tragedy, you know, they're stories about humanity.

Yeah.

Yeah, I mean, they're funny old dudes, you know, and they're kind of in love with each other, although they don't know how to say so.
