Here's what we know, what was announced. matched

On Friday, China's Ministry of Finance, together with the customs and taxation authorities, confirmed that from September the 1st this year, lithium-ion batteries will be hit with a 2% consumption tax. matched

Doesn't sound like much, but 2% actually is a huge amount of money. matched

And it doesn't stop there, because from September 2027, that rate will be 4%. matched

The tax also applies to lithium primary batteries, mercury-free primary batteries, nickel metal hydro batteries, vanadium redox flow batteries, and NMC, so nickel manganese cobalt chemistry batteries. matched

Here's the part that's truly interesting. matched

Sodium ion batteries, solid state batteries, and fuel cells are completely exempt from this 4% tax through to the end of 2028, at least anyway. matched

And remember, sodium, iron and solid states were on the original 2015 exemption list, which means until now, sodium batteries have been paying, and solid state, a 4% consumption tax. matched

In other words, lithium batteries matched

in China are about to get 4% more expensive and sodium is about to become 4% cheaper. matched

The technologies that were taxed are now tax-free and the technology that was tax-free is now taxed. matched

Beijing has flipped the script completely. matched

So this is actually a pretty big swing, because it's in theory an 8% swing. matched
