He's watching a site called GMGN and it tracks new meme coins as they launch.
Matt, what are you seeing?
So about 130 in what, less than five minutes or so?
Now, the platform takes a small fee every time a coin is created and every time one is traded.
Last year, the launch platforms on one blockchain, Solana, took $762 million in launch fees, more than double the year before.
But fewer than one coin in every hundred makes it into a proper exchange.
The rest die within hours.
The platform gets paid on all of them, whether they survive or not.
So what are the chances of launching a successful coin?
Well, pretty slim, according to Professor Alexander.
But at least with a slot machine, you've got some idea of the odds.
With meme coin, it's different.
Alberto Mongadini is a postdoctoral researcher in the cybersecurity section of the Technical University of Denmark.
He and his colleagues tracked 35,000 meme coins over three months.
The study did not include any coins from President Donald Trump's celebration coins.
In their sample, only 2% made any real money, around 700 coins.
So they went looking at how those 700 coins had done it.
In Alberto's research, a great majority of the winners were rigged.
