And they don't get those right all the time.
And so it's unrealistic to think that the college coaches and scouts and general managers and coordinators that we talk to and other people that we talk to, we talk to the NFL scouts as well to get some perspective on this.
It's unrealistic to think that we're going to nail all these.
Like last year, the top five were Kate Klubnick,
Darren Nussmeier, John Mateer, DJ Lagway, and Lenore Sellers.
I can tell you four of them did not have very good seasons.
And so that to me underscores the nature of how difficult this is because the position is also so circumstances dependent.
What you have around you may be one of the most talented quarterbacks out there, but if you don't have protection, if you don't have good supporting cast, good receivers to throw to, if you don't have a play caller who calls particularly to your skill set,
and has a scheme built around you, you may not succeed as much.
We saw that with Arch Manning last year.
Early in the season, he struggled a lot.
He's physically gifted.
I think a lot of people point to the traits.
He's got elite traits, arm strength, processing, runner, very good athlete, very smart, can run the operation.
But he was under fire the first half of last year.
Texas had one of the worst offensive lines in the country in terms of pass protection.
So, yes, did he make some mistakes and did he struggle on his own?
Absolutely.
But would he have been helped if he had been given a little bit better protection and maybe receivers didn't drop the ball as much?
Probably so.
