One really interesting line is that they say, quote, other competitors use sponsorships as a way to win business, which to me implies that they don't at least publicly advertise using sponsors at all.
Daktronics' balance sheet definitely wasn't the kind where you'd expect them to suddenly decide to invest in a sponsorship deal with Kawhi Leonard.
You're seeing a company that once had quite a bit of cash, as much as $80 million in 2021.
In 2022, Daktronics made just over $500,000 in net income.
And it owed way more than that in debt.
Daktronics was on the brink, not just of not bringing home big profits, but of actually going bankrupt.
And even in 2023, Daktronics had just $10 million of cash on hand.
And they had that cash through debt facilities, through revolvers, basically borrowing it just to fund their operations.
And when you listen to Daktronics' earnings calls from this period of time, in their second quarter of 2023, it's not like a normal, boring earnings call.
The company is clearly fighting for its life.
You can hear the company's then-CEO, who was the scion of the family business, talk about just how bad things had gotten and just how unprecedented the time it was for Daktronics.
Somewhere Tom Thibodeau smiles.
I'm the Kobe Bryant of earnings calls.
I'll just watch this thing play over and over and over again.
And there was another moment I saw, I just kept rewinding, which is when the company's audit committee chair, a member of the board, spoke up, which isn't very common.
It's like seeing Tyler Kolek at the end of a game or something.
And he was speaking because the company's auditor had issued a dire warning.
To be clear, a going concern warning is very bad.
That meant that the company might go bankrupt within the next 12 months.
The stock went up six times between 2023 and today.
