And in that moment, the need to be kind...
to work with those local representatives to know they're doing their very best and then work that all the way up through our state parliaments into the federal parliament, being respectful of those that stand for public office and I think increasingly being respectful for all parts of the political system.
I have no politics in this office.
I have no policies to offer.
I have no money to grant.
But when I look at what is happening in Australia, a changing dynamic in the political system, I think we've got to learn to be understanding, to enter into respectful conversation with those that bring different political and social points of view and find the way through that we always have with common ground, always with the ambition to remain strong as a successful modern democracy, not descending into just meeting people
always being oppositional and using language that doesn't help any of us sort out some of our big problems.
Well, civics education is a big topic for me and my office and for many Australians who are involved in trying to repair that and to meet the challenge of the decline in civics understanding across the country.
We know that probably the most educated on our civics, there are two groups who are most educated.
They're probably in grade five and six at the moment.
I see many of those young students who come to Canberra
on the civics education tour.
They come to government house as well as the parliaments and the high court, a number of institutions.
They learn something in primary school that is about foundational understanding.
Why do we have a constitution?
What does government mean?
What is a parliament?
Why is there a governor general?
And I meet them and they're so enthusiastic.
They soak that all up.
