And if we don't understand that, then we allow these other things to run with terrible consequences.

So the work is going on, but this should be a clear focus for, I think, all leaders across all parts of the country.

So part of treating everyone with kindness and care and respect is not to punish the Australian public for not knowing about our civics, but in my role to invite everybody in.

So my commitment to Australia is that I'll use the current forms of modern communication, so whether it's my speeches or our website, but more importantly things like social media, Instagram, Facebook and increasingly LinkedIn, to invite everybody in to tell and show and celebrate what is it that goes on often we're seeing behind closed gates or part of pomp and ceremony that if you don't understand it's very easy to criticise.

And I can see how many Australians would think it's irrelevant or it's part of a history we don't pay attention to.

So what I do is I invite everybody in.

I do long discussions on everything I do.

I invite people into the behind the scenes before swearing in the ministers of the federal government.

I do it when I'm about to sign a bill.

I increasingly put up little reels when I meet the students who ask me the most extraordinary questions.

And I then try to play that back to the country.

I'm trying to use everything at my disposal to be generous and respectful of a community that has not got a lot of time, has lots of other influences, maybe tuned into things that give them another set of information that may not be factually correct.

So I think it's my job to show up and to show that I really want people to engage, to keep in touch with us.

I've received lots of emails asking me to focus on certain things that we continue to put on our socials.

But I also invite a lot of people in to my role to help me understand what does modern Australia need from a modern Governor-General and how do we do that with respect and try to uplift the country to really care about each other and to understand that we are a unified country, but we're not defined by uniformity.

We care about the same values, but we are such a diverse, fascinating, extraordinary nation from which much of our strength comes.

But how do we manage that in a way that respects each other and gets the best out of it rather than fighting with one another or attacking?
