And then you have kind of broader, longer term issues that have been present in the blue collar workforce. matched

And that is things like for years, blue collar companies have struggled to find workers because a lot of younger people are going to college and looking for kind of knowledge based jobs as opposed to jobs that require things like heavy lifting and operating machinery. matched

You still have the fact that manufacturers, even though they're hiring, they're adding back jobs. matched

Employment in that sector in particular is still below where it was before the pandemic. matched

And demand for their products is picking up so much that they're having trouble, in a lot of cases, hiring enough workers to meet that demand. matched

And so that's kind of what we're seeing going on there. matched

It's a little bit of a mixed, nuanced picture. matched

Some workers are certainly pursuing new opportunities in different fields. matched

One person I spoke with is a resident of Atlanta, and he worked at a restaurant that shut down last spring when the pandemic first hit. matched

And he couldn't find work in the restaurant industry. matched

So he pivoted and got a certificate in forklift driving and landed a job at a distribution center where he's making much higher wages than he was. matched

the restaurant industry, and he plans to stay in warehousing because it pays better and because he knows that the workload is going to be persistent. matched

And so given just all of the uncertainty that a lot of businesses have right now, many of these companies are probably just holding off to see, you know, whether the economy is going to more quickly improve. matched

For one, you have the fact that there was an initial hiring spurt in late spring and early summer when many businesses that had been under complete lockdown were allowed to reopen. matched

Since then, though, states have been lifting restrictions on businesses at a slower pace. matched

And so naturally you'll have less hiring. matched

And then another reason is just that a lot of employers at the beginning of the coronavirus crisis were holding on to workers thinking, you know, maybe things will get better. matched

But at this point they're seeing, hey, we're just not getting the revenues that we thought we would be getting. matched
