Before 15 years ago, say, we didn't have the ability to look inside the living human brain.
So we assumed that the brain changes in early development.
This is partly because all the research that had been done on brain development had been done on animal brains.
So it was assumed that that would be the same in the human brain.
It turns out it's not.
I think the study of the teenage brain is one example where brain scans absolutely revolutionised what we know about teenagers and learning.
The hormonal changes are huge and changing school environments must have an impact on behaviour.
But we now know that the brain undergoes dramatic development.
And one example here is...
The fact that we now know that parts of the brain that are involved in things like planning, in social interaction, peer influence, are very much developing during the teenage years.
And yet, if you speak to most teachers and you look at the curriculum, there's no systematic, formal, for example, lessons about how to plan or how to work in groups, how to resist peer influence.
And maybe there should be.
