And so parents see that as a way to give them a chance to figure out on their own what they can and can't spend.
And when they run out of that money and they ask for more, well, the parents may say, sorry, but that was your allowance.
But generally speaking, within the games, they have the responsibility to themselves to shop around for the virtual item they want,
to figure out how much it costs, how much virtual currency they'll have left over, and how long that will last them until the next time they get their allowance or birthday money or whatever it is.
But it's really giving them a chance to have some sort of financial independence that we don't normally see in the real world.
Well, the problem with so-called loot boxes, which are essentially like baseball cards, they come in buying packs, you don't really know what you're getting.
So if a child doesn't get the item they want, they may be inclined to keep spending over and over and over till they get that item.
And what the children don't often realize is that that particular item may be a rare one and they don't necessarily understand the concept of odds, which is why some of the regulators and politicians and advocates compare
this mechanism for making money to gambling.
Also bear in mind with virtual goods you can't return it.
It's not like when you go you know go to the Gappy buy a shirt doesn't fit you decide to return and get your money back.
Nine times out of ten you buy a virtual good you cannot change your mind and get it back.
These are little learning lessons that can be very hard for kids you know to them it's very emotional and I've seen it firsthand with my own daughter.
The general advice is to talk them through it.
Spend a little time with them in the game and get an understanding of how it works and see how they do the shopping.
And before they hit that buy button, talk to them and say, well, do you know how much virtual currency you're going to have left after you make this purchase?
Do you really want this item?
Why do you want it?
Help them think through the kinds of questions that we as adults normally ask and help them understand it.
