And that became pretty central to my whole reporting career is thinking about
when we're often trained to look at like the thing that everyone is paying attention to in the headlines, like so often embedded within that is a really powerful set of stories that are basically the things that have been pushed to the side of that quote unquote main story.
So that was really how I got my start.
Like I, and a physical reporter, I really do pay a lot of attention to my own like body.
Like where am I very curious or where am I surprised?
Or so many of my story ideas have come out of seeing something in the news that feels not quite right and wanting to do something.
some further digging.
And as I mentioned, I was taking this reporting course and the amazing, amazing Bruce Shapiro, who was teaching that at the time, had us each draw a piece of paper out of a hat.
And we had to tell a story strictly based upon the numerical address that was on the piece of paper.
And I didn't know you could do such a thing.
Mine wound up being about a nursing home that had burned down in New Haven and there had been litigation around it.
And so I learned about this whole universe of things that were accessible that
I think helped me realize so often we think of investigative work as like someone uncovering a deep, dark secret that like no one had access to.
And so much of what I learned from Bruce is actually like most of the time, the most compelling and important investigative stories actually were out there in the public sphere, but it was in all these dots that hadn't really been brought together and hadn't been looked at as a constellation.
And so I think some of it was for me, that curiosity of like when you pull the thread, like almost always like,
If you're really curious, like something deeper is there and trusting.
I'm very intuition based.
So trusting my intuition on that has proven both really helpful and really gratifying.
So I was also a freshman in college when the Iraq War began.
And so a big part of my formation as a journalist happened because I had been involved in anti-war activism.
