Yeah.

That was a major journey because partly I just had no idea what I was doing.

I got in bed with the U.S.

military.

I arrived on the largest U.S.

military base in Baghdad.

And instantaneously, the very first thing you see when you arrive, it's a Cinnabon and a Pizza Hut and a beauty salon staffed entirely by people who have been recruited there from afar.

How did you end up on the U.S.

military base?

oh based in the first place have you all heard about the concept of military embeds it's kind of an outdated principle but it was controversial at the time and it was basically the military offered journalists a chance to essentially drop down and be working alongside u.s military forces so you could do an embed with you know embedded in afghanistan with the mortuary affairs unit the people who were processing all of the bodies of those who had died

And I did embed with a military police unit in Iraq.

And I really, in my case, had to do that to get on to the base.

I didn't think it'd be the best idea to say to the U.S.

government, I would like to investigate your human trafficking practices.

Can I come hang out with you?

So I went that route.

I simultaneously did some other stories, got the official embed, and then was able to start really reporting on this trafficking issue.

At the beginning, it was very clear.

I wasn't savvy about approaching people in the right spaces.
