Sadly, I wasn't surprised to hear that story.
We are hearing other stories of similar nature and it's horrific and we would never want someone to be experiencing that and we know that the eating disorder voice is seeking that.
Anorexia would try and get access to a GLP-1 vaccine
And I think we have to be really thinking about all of the people with an eating disorder as well alongside Kate's experience.
All people experiencing an eating disorder may be trying to access a GLP-1, may be already prescribed GLP-1.
And how do we keep them safe in this process?
We know that for the most part, eating disorder screening isn't happening.
And in lieu of having a really clear guideline to support clinical decision making, what we're trying to do is encouraging prescribing practitioners to embed eating disorder screening before you're prescribing a GLP-1 because we are facing a high-risk population.
We're facing people with higher weight are straight away at high risk of developing an eating disorder because of factors like weight stigma, because of disordered eating, because of poor body image, etc.
It is exacerbated by these messages that are kind of swirling around us in this period of really significant increases in GLP-1s.
The other part of that prayer, though, is around telehealth.
Now,
Telehealth is an amazing part of our system.
It really allows people who can't see a practitioner in person to access healthcare.
So we can't just wipe that out.
But it's really important that GLP-1 is a significant medication.
And so we can't have this low-touch model where people are having a phone call without adequate assessment, without citing the individual.
and then no ongoing monitoring by that person to ensure this person is safe.
It has significant impacts on nutrition and all of the other social factors that come with eating.
And so telehealth is not providing that at the moment.
