I always loved the bush because I grew up going to various little holidays near the bush.
But now, like more so in the last five years, I need that.
like dose of nature and I love in your book you there's a bit at the beginning where you describe yourself as a compulsive hiker yeah I love that you've added the word compulsive because it's just like it's such a like opposites to hiking yeah about calming and then there's the compulsion tell me about your relationship with hiking because it is it's such a part of who you are
You write.
You walk and write.
And, I mean, it doesn't surprise me because you need the space.
To write something as huge as I Ate the Stars and all your other books, you need space.
You can't – like modern life can get so busy and suffocating and claustrophobic.
You write that your breakup with Hope felt like leaving a toxic relationship, which was such a good description.
Where were we supposed to be by now with climate and what led you to let go of Hope?
Because we're not where we were supposed to be.
Like someone else will do it?
It's not my problem?
What about relief?
Because you've written about how letting go of hope and there's pressure on hope.
Yeah.
There's just immense relief.
How does that feel?
I think we're all craving the simplification.
I know I absolutely am.
