In fact, they've said if they can get one young person walking through the temple doors because of Gabi, their job is done.

But theirs isn't the only robot monk we're seeing.

In other countries like Japan, they're being used to address shortages in actual monks.

And they're being trained to give spiritual advice, answer philosophical and personal questions, and even assist in temple services.

For them, these robots are a huge part of continuing the religion.

And that's where the counterpoints come in.

Robots aren't just shiny PR gimmicks.

there is merit to having them around, even though I hate saying those words out loud.

We know they can handle the dull, the dirty, the dangerous better than us.

They process data at speeds we simply can't and they can fill gaps in shrinking workforces.

They've shown us what they can do when it comes to things like warehousing and they're showing real promise in sectors like aged care and disability support.

Sure, we'd all rather real humans be there, but

We're seeing robots be used here to combat things like chronic isolation, assist with daily physical tasks, and even overcome common language barriers because of their ability to speak multiple languages.

In a country like Australia with an aging population that is incredibly diverse, that's not nothing.

But here's the question I think we're not asking enough.

Who decided this was the future?

Because I can't say it was us.

What started as an experiment gone wrong by a scientist who spent the rest of his career warning us not to trust machines with our emotions has become a 60-year design strategy doing exactly the opposite.

The robots have been put in our clothes, thrown onto our streets.

They've been brought to the Met, the White House, ordained as monks.
