So what happened after that explosion was a 2,600 square kilometre exclusion zone was set up around the exploded reactor site and that was to protect people from radiation.

You can't live there, although some people do live on the fringes against advice.

You can't do anything there.

It's exclusion.

You shouldn't go anywhere near it.

And that zone is set to remain in place for up to 20,000 years.

It sucks so bad.

It is worth noting, though, there are obviously impacts of radiation on animals in the Chernobyl exclusion zone.

Some research has been done, particularly around insects, because they actually live at the top soil layer.
