foreign policy, indeed a Republican foreign policy that goes back decades, that indeed Europe is a partner, whatever happens, that indeed there is still some semblance of an international system rather than the our way or the highway system that Trump and other officials tend to promote.
I mean, that is such a long way away in terms of 2028.
Remember, we've got to get through the congressional midterm elections.
And if the Democrats...
Give the Republicans a defeat in both the Senate and the House.
It's going to hurt everyone in the Trump administration.
That being said, I think as you get towards 2028, there's going to be probably a question of whether Rubio can do two things.
One is whether he can up his game in terms of the spectacle.
And I hate having to say this, but a lot of American politics is now on show rather than substance.
And he got out-spectacled by Donald Trump in 2016.
Rubio knows the issues.
Trump doesn't.
Rubio knew foreign policy, domestic policy.
Trump didn't.
But Trump was the one who got the headlines.
Can Rubio grab the headlines and keep them, again, without offending Trumpists?
And that can be quite difficult.
And secondly, can Rubio distance himself from the damage that the Republicans may be taking going into 2028?
He's fortunate in that his portfolio does not cover the domestic economy, which is not going well.
Can he avoid being tainted by that?
