Sean Grayson gets a 20-year prison sentence for the murder of Sonia Massey on July 6, 2024.
She reported a possible prowler outside her home in Springfield, Illinois.
Inside, with another deputy, Grayson orders Massey to remove a pot of hot water from the stove and put it down.
She says, I rebuke you in the name of Jesus.
He threatens to shoot her.
She says, I'm sorry, puts her hands up and ducks behind a counter.
He approaches, there's confusion, and then she's shot in the face.
Grayson says he thought Massey was going to throw hot water at him.
The other deputy testified there was no threat.
Massey was 36 years old, black, a single mother with mental health problems that had been reported to police.
Grayson is white, 31, convicted in October of second-degree murder.
He's required to serve at least 10 years of that sentence.
