If you think of it in isolation from the sort of scary side of things, that this is the advancing technology that many people have been asking for.
They're kind of, I'm sick and tired of losing my keys.
I keep getting phone calls when the dog gets out.
All of these things are technology responding to those issues that we've had in producing products and companies doing very well out of them.
But like with so many technologies, what we then see is a kind of another wave, I suppose, of people that find another way to use it.
Some of that can be called innovation.
But in stories like this, what we're really looking at is bad actors who are looking to use technology in order to harm an individual.
and are now finding technologies that might once have been the preserve of James Bond and the Secret Service, now in their hands really cheaply from high street stores, available from shops online, designed to do something else, but now being used in order to keep a track on people.
So, you know, a cat food camera, a babysitting camera,
A tag for your dog to make sure that it hasn't gone running out of your property.
All of those things can be repurposed to keep a track on not what they're intended to, but on an individual.
And if that's done without that person's knowledge or permission, then effectively that's surveillance of an individual without their permission.
We're seeing things that come in packs of stickers that are not much thicker than a paper sticker or a fridge magnet that you could easily attach to.
And that's designed for the convenience of people who actually want to track an animal.
So that with the animal escapes, and it's not too much of a burden for the animal.
So these are technologies that are designed to do a job really well.
But you're absolutely right.
If somebody is in the throes of a breakup and they forget that that pet was tracked, it might have been a year ago, two years ago, whatever it was, when that was the intended purpose of what they were doing.
It might not be the first thing that you think about when a relationship breaks up, that somebody still has access to that.
And so ultimately, if you're tracking a dog and the dog is always with somebody, then by default, you can assume that somebody could track a person based on their proximity to an animal.
