We really set out really to combine three elements, to retain our best players, not as easy as everybody thinks, to recruit elite high school players who fit the academic structure and the big time environment of the University of Texas,

It's a big jump from high school to college in today's world, in our space.

And then I think with the portal, it's not as simple as picking players out of the portal.

A, you have to convince them to come to your program, but B, you really have to have what they're looking for.

That's not always going to be the case.

So how do you combine the elements of retention, the right high school players with portal?

And that's really, I think that's where the magic will happen for us at Texas to get it the most right we can.

But I'll start with Modest.

Getting him back was big.

I've noticed this summer, Matt, he's picking up where he left off.

I'm really impressed with Modest's work ethic.

I think you and I may have talked about this a few times along the way.

When Bill Walton was always covering me as the coach at Arizona when I was in the Pac-12, he would always ask me, no matter who our front court players were, does he love the game because he's tall and he's supposed to play basketball?

Or if he were six foot, would he still love it?

I would say in answering that question about Modest, Modest loves the game of basketball.

If he was six foot tall, he would be playing.

He has this drive and he has a work ethic that I haven't seen on somebody his size.

To me, he sets the tone for a lot of good things in our program.

So for us, and we've tried to really steal ideas and learn from the NBA, the executives, the general managers, the front offices, not necessarily the coaching staffs.

And it's amazing the different things that you can learn because they've been doing it naturally because that's their game, right?
