I never knew.
I just watched.
And I was the eldest of the boys, about 20 of us grandkids.
We had to whitewash her basement, keep it clean and a nice place for people to stay.
There was no social network back in the 50s.
We had people that would ride the train.
You can call what you want to.
These were people that had fallen out of society.
They were all intelligent, smart, craftsmen, this and that.
And they, and alcoholics probably, most of them.
And they'd come down and they knew they could get off and go to a Mama K and she'd take care of them.
She said, I got three rules.
You can't drink, you can't swear, and you've gotta work.
So my first introduction was there was rules.
And they were all good rolls.
Pretty basic operating system.
Okay.
So you know what?
After about a while, we had some of the best painters and carpenters you've ever seen.
But we'd lose them every now and then.
