Why is the National Guard in town?

Do people need to protect themselves?

And what can the city of Chicago do to block the National Guard from assisting ICE in the city?

The Trump administration has said the Guard troops have orders to protect federal functions, personnel and property, specifically ICE operations.

Mayor Brandon Johnson says he will do whatever it takes to protect the residents and fight what he calls a federal invasion.

Meanwhile, President Trump has called for the arrest of Johnson.

Trump accused the mayor of failing to protect ICE officers.

Trump's comments on social media came after Mayor Johnson signed an executive order prohibiting immigration and customs enforcement from using city-owned space to conduct operations.

Mayor Johnson says this is Trump's mode of operating.

Hundreds of National Guard troops have been deployed to Chicago at Trump's behest, who has called the city a war zone, despite its homicide rates reaching their lowest levels since the 1960s.

Johnson says he will fight what he calls Trump's attacks on his city via policy, in the courts, and in the streets.
