Not give them the money and then charge them $30, $40 for giving them $1.50.
So this is going to be bad news for some banks because it's been a good profit center.
But I'm not going to cry for the banks.
Well, the best thing about this is probably that a share of AMD can now get you a happy meal, maybe even a full-value meal at McDonald's.
But seriously, this is a subject I hesitate to weigh in on.
Our listeners may not know, but AMD's stock has a cadre of loyal followers who are maybe only third or fourth in sort of craziness behind the XM Sirius types or, dare I say, the Apple types.
And they're probably already writing us letters about how we don't know anything and Intel deserves all the horrible things it's gotten.
But as far as most consumers are concerned, and I'm on the nerdy edge, I build my own computers.
A few years ago, AMD was a preferred chip for the money.
You got a little more performance, perhaps.
and they were taking some market share after a long struggle, but then, as often happens in the tech industry, the tide sort of changed, and Intel's chips moved ahead, they forged ahead.
As far as most consumers are concerned, Intel chips are cheap enough, offer enough performance, and they have no reason to go asking for an AMD chip.
Quite frankly, they wouldn't care if AMD disappeared.
So if Intel was throwing some elbows, that's not good, but it ain't the only reason they're ahead.
And Intel really needs AMD to stick around.
Otherwise, the government will be on their back nonstop.
So they need a kind of sickly, pathetic AMD to keep limping along.
And there's not much of a cure for that.
And as we've discussed here in the past, one of the main indicators of whether or not somebody defaults on a mortgage isn't whether they can afford the monthly payment.
It's their perception that they're underwater and that there's no point in paying off and they ditch.
