It's dynamic, but it doesn't have a wholeness.
And that wholeness is represented by it being able to reproduce itself.
That's kind of the thread that I would go along, the distinction.
I want to go back to what it is being denied or what is at issue.
So I took most of the book, Dennett is basically making a big argument to deny the hard problem of consciousness and denying or grouping most accounts of consciousness is effectively Cartesian.
that they are slightly more sophisticated views of Cartesian dualism that are summarized under the Cartesian theater.
And that's basically how he lumps in basically every other kind of, or most other kinds of accounts of consciousness.
Certainly any that would attribute themselves to the hard problem of consciousness.
It's just another form of Cartesian dualism.
And I don't know the literature enough to say if there's another alternate, but basically he's
grouping all of those in and he's taking a run against that in this book.
And then when I get to this section at the end about selves and what we're able to talk about, where we're getting into the kinds of things that are precious to us about
the Cartesian dualist account of consciousness because it gives us a notion of self that we want to hold on to.
And he acknowledges that he wants to deny that.
So I'm trying to here now understand where the problem is in saying that, well, look, a snake or a rat or a cockroach or an elephant are all agentic beings.
They move along in the world.
They respond to their environment.
They also make choices.
They choose to go after the mouse or not after the mouse, or they choose to go towards this food or not towards that food.
