I'm Severin Waites.
I'm a PhD student in Economic Geography at the London School of Economics.
The easy part really is to find how much land is given over to housing because there's quite a lot of available data on that.
The more difficult part is to find how much land is used by golf courses because there's no available data on that particularly.
I used OpenStreetMap, which is similar to Google Maps, to download polygon data for golf courses.
Polygon data is some sort of essentially geographical map data which allows you to plot out the area of golf courses.
So I loaded the polygon data from OpenStreetMap into my mapping software and used the software to calculate the land share in Surrey, England and Great Britain of golf courses.
Yes, that is actually true.
I found that 2.8% of the total land in Surrey is used for golf courses, whereas about 2.1% is used for housing.
The claim that's been made for England isn't true.
More land is used for housing than for golf.
For Great Britain, the claim isn't true either.
