Kia ora, I'm Shalise Tansey and today on The Detail, what needs to be done to secure netball's future in New Zealand and why is the sport in the same position again?
Nearly a year ago, my colleague Alexia Russell did a podcast episode about the problems plaguing Netball New Zealand and TVNZ's broadcast deal for the ANZ premiership.
But a lot has happened since then.
So today I'm talking to Suzanne McFadden, founding editor of Locker Room, which focuses on women's sport.
Suzanne starts off by breaking down what's happened recently.
This is now the third year in a row that the premiership is in this position where players and coaching staff and all the teams are unsure whether they can actually continue the game on into the next year.
Why do we keep coming back to these conversations time and time again?
Is that just because there is that belief that women's sport is just not as attractive as men's sports?
Does it just come down to that?
In terms of the game, actually, and the premiership going ahead, does it just come down to those broadcasting rights and those corporate sponsorships?
What do you think this effect of the uncertainty and the silence is having on them?
And how much longer do you think those players and coaching staff can kind of wait it out and see what Netball New Zealand will have to say before they just go, all right, I've got to cut it here and I've got to start looking at other options?
But would 2028 be a little bit of a situation where it's just too little too late?
What could a shake-up look like, though, in terms of the game?
Because I've seen a few ideas floated about whether it's private ownership or whether the game goes back to being a trans-Tasman competition.
Are those things actually viable at this point?
But what would a loss of, say, the Northern Mystics, how would that impact the game as it already stands, given that it's already on rocky grounds?
So if the Northern Mystics have already started looking elsewhere, how long ago should they have had reassurances about the game's security?
And do you think, because there was the end of last year, there was the Dame Nolene Toto saga, we've had a new CEO and those board changes that you'd talked about,
if this should have been organised or the premiership's future should have been organised four months ago, do you think those things got in the way of those decisions being made?
