Colleagues, today I am introducing a resolution on behalf of the Youth Commission to declare February as Teen Dating Violence Awareness and Prevention Month.
Thank you to the Youth Commission for working on this in partnership with Black Women Revolt and Asian Women's Shelter on this important issue.
One in three high schoolers will experience dating abuse before high school graduation.
Young people are impacted by abusive relationships when they are threatened with or subjected to physical violence, sexual violence, psychological aggression, or stalking from a current or former intimate partner.
Dating violence can also occur digitally through social media and other electronic communications, and young people experiencing violence are more likely to be vulnerable to long-term behavioral and health consequences.
including mental trauma and drug abuse, which also increases the risk of violence in adulthood and future relationships.
Therefore, it is critical to educate young people about the signs of domestic violence to set them up for success by allowing them to recognize for themselves what's healthy
nonviolent relationships look like.
