And in 50 years' time, we're going to have two.

So that burden of paying for these older people has doubled in the last 50 and it's going to double again in the next 50.

It is very much a demographic calculus and it's definitely heading away from us.

Look, in many ways in public policy, anything is affordable if you're willing to pay for it.

So it's a tautology.

So the question is, where does the money come from?

Either it comes from more taxes or it comes from spending less money on other things.

So the big question for New Zealanders is, are we willing to pay a lot more in taxes to keep paying for New Zealand super as it is?

Or are we going to see the degradation of public services that we have seen in recent years that will only worsen over coming decades?

Because if we do nothing with super, that will absolutely increase.

It will increase fast.

and it's going to be relentless.

Are we going to teach less?

Are we going to look after our people less with health?

Are we going to invest less in transport?

Are we going to spend less on defense?

Those are the trade-offs that we have to make.

And fundamentally, I think, when you look forward for the next 10, 20, 30 years, there will come a time when the young people who are paying all the taxes, the workers, are going to rise up and say, I don't think so.

And you get a very disruptive change.

And I think that's the big issue is,
