I'm doing my best not to make it sound like I know everything and the game now is screwed because that's not the case.
However, when you break down what's going on right now, it feels like there are a lot of elite pitching machines out there.
And if I'm a 23-year-old player with elite stuff and I'm an elite pitching machine, chances are three of the other five guys in my rotation in AAA are also pretty elite pitching machines.
So...
how do I separate myself from those people?
Because right now guys are just throwing harder and throwing better stuff because the data is available.
They're learning it at a younger age.
There's places like driveline and tread and all these other places across the country that are really good at teaching these players how to have elite stuff.
So if everybody just has elite stuff, how do you separate yourself?
Well, you got to know how to play the game.
How do you know how to play the game?
Well, one, you got to play it, but two, you got to pay attention.
right and for me you got to have conversations so i don't know if there's a lot of guys talking you know like the game's over and now you're eating after the game like are they sitting at the table talking about the game or are they already worried about something else you know i'm not 100 sure but back in the day it was you sit there you talk about the game you talk about maybe what pitch you could have thrown instead of the pitch that you threw um
With all that being said, a lot of times now, the pitcher, his whole life has just been told what pitch to throw.
There's never been a learning curve for figuring out what pitch to throw because it's all data-driven, I guess, which is great.
information to have, but doesn't necessarily mean it's right.
When I'm coaching the young players now, and once you get me going, it's hard for me to stop, but when I'm coaching the young pitcher now whose coach is calling the pitch from the dugout,
It's not that I disagree with that tactic.
It's just my whole life I was taught I have to believe in the next pitch that I'm throwing.
So then you have to learn a process in which you use to get to the next pitch so that you believe in it, so that that leads to more success because the belief is there.
