getting me exposure, getting me out in the public, and sharing this music and learning how to be a performer.
And then there was the money part of it, where to go to these stages, these bars, as a child, to perform, took gas out of the car that my dad would need to get to work in the morning.
So there was a constant...
battle between them.
They fought a lot about it and it was, that added a lot of stress to my own life.
And then maybe they paid me 25 bucks or 50 bucks or they would send the hat around and collect a bit of money for me and that would go into the car or into some grocery money.
So it was not as if
singing in the bar was my candy money, or I was going to be able to buy something for myself with it, or...

She didn't, you know, she couldn't carry a tune, and she was a Jane Smoker, and I don't think she would ever have, if she didn't have a musical child, I don't think that that would have been a path that she would have had an obsession with.
But she recognized that I had musical talent, like singing my ear, the harmonies.
I was quite advanced for my age, very young.
And I think she saw it as a way out for me, for us.
She saw that, you know, if my child can make it
And she really believed that I would.
