I've coached women who walked into every meeting determined to be as helpful as possible.

And that's admirable.

But eventually I asked one of them, what if your goal wasn't to be the most helpful person in the meeting?

She looked at me like I asked her to stop breathing.

Then I said, What if your goal was to be one of the most valuable voices in the room?

There's a difference.

Helpful often focuses on doing.

Valuable focuses on thinking.

Organizations need both.

But leadership opportunities are often connected to the people whose thinking consistently moves the conversation forward.

Let me tell you something.

I don't believe your goal should be to talk more.

I think that's advice that misses the point.

We've all been in the meetings with people who talk constantly without adding much value.

That is not leadership.

Your goal isn't more words, it's more intentional contribution.

One thoughtful question can change the direction of an entire meeting.

One insight can help a team avoid weeks of wasted work.

One observation can help people see a problem from a completely different angle.

That's influence.
