If your phone is five or six years old, it may be something that you recycle instead of actually get money for it.
With the carriers, you kind of have to look at the fine print a little bit.
They have these really aggressive trade-in deals where you can get $1,000 off of a new phone.
that doesn't mean that they're just giving you $1,000 right away.
It means that they're taking that value and applying it to your bill every month.
So another kind of benefit for them is they're not locking us into service contracts anymore.
Like you don't have to sign a two-year contract for your service, but what you're doing is you're agreeing to this two or even three-year contract to pay off your new phone.
So even though your phone is free or $1,000 off or 800 or whatever it is,
it's applied as a bill credit.
So you need to keep that in mind that if you decide to leave that carrier or to cancel service, you still have to pay off that phone.
There's also some restrictions on who can take advantage of those really aggressive trade-in offers.
If you're on a plan that you've had for 10 years and you haven't changed it and it's kind of this legacy cheap wireless service plan, you're probably not going to be able to get one of these new deals.
a big incentive for them is trying to get us to move to 5G.
So they're going to want you to be in their higher end, unlimited plans.
And so if you want to take advantage of one of these trade-in offers from them, you would probably have to change your wireless service as well.
Everyone I talked to said the time to trade in your phone is now.
If you're thinking about it and you have an old phone you don't use,
the values drop daily, basically.
They fluctuate a lot too.
Around iPhone events, there's usually a lot of older devices that hit the market because people are upgrading to the newer phone.
