We think it's a really good model to test new drugs that could potentially target latency.
And there have been a few around.
So the first approach to latency
was just let's activate the T cell and let's just give it a stimulus.
Yeah, so put it in an active state, the drugs are there, it it will trap the replicating virus when it comes out.
And in fact that was quite a dangerous approach.
The other approach has been using some drugs that unravel genes and allow them to start making copies.
And there are various drugs that can change how tightly the DNA is wrapped up or not.
And one drug that we actually use commonly called sodium valproate.
Which is a commonly used drug for epilepsy, for example.
Yeah, it has this action.
So we think that what a very nice application of this our finding is that you can test drugs to see if they actually have an effect.
And in fact we're testing some others that have been developed at Monash that act slightly different led to saline valve.
