And we're hungry for them, so we latch on to belief in other ways.
We grab on to influencers who might be just as angry or frustrated with the world or clinging to other ideas about what it is to be masculine or the
lack of comfort that we need in the world, or if we could just exercise enough or get down to a certain weight, then we could find that happiness and meaning and purpose that we had been pursuing all along.
There was a study that I highlighted that 32% of Americans
claimed that they believe that we're living in the end times.
And that was cross politics and cross religion.
And if one out of three people believe we're on this immediate decline into entropy and to a zombie apocalypse, like why would you bring children into this world with those beliefs?

So those beliefs, I think because we've eroded some of those collective belief sources, have left us hungry.
And you can see it in one really cool way, which I just find fascinating, that the placebo effect, which most of your audience knows, it doesn't work all the time.
There's lots of qualms about it.
But the placebo effect is rising in the U.S.,
So I think that it's not that beliefs went away.
I think that the beliefs are still there, even in a world in which we feel like the power of belief is on the decline.
I think that that's true.
And I think that there might be multiple explanations for it.
I think that as science and technology improve, we just believe that it's going to work better.
But I think that there is a desire to believe in something.
