And that was the consensus view.
And then we had COVID.
And we got to watch the athletes, but without fans in the stands.
And the home field advantage in those games disappeared.
Gone.
Which is amazing.
Right?
That's exactly it.
Yes.
And it turns out that the home field advantage was about all the things you just mentioned, Adam.
It was about the beliefs that I'm not alone, that people are for me instead of against me.
And that creates a performance advantage.
Exactly, right?
And that disappears when you don't have that immediate response from the fans in the stands cheering for you.
And I think the problem is that the more lonely that we feel with this world, and it leads into the work that you're doing and your book coming out later this year, is that that loneliness, that lack of social connection, what we've done is we've stripped out some of the collective beliefs that we share with one another.
But
I think the original research I was doing with the happiness advantage is that when we feel these positive beliefs, that I matter, that I'm not alone, that my behavior matters, that I have something to give them, something to be grateful for, those, I believe, propel us towards an upward spiral of success.
Well, the first thing that I would say to that is that when I ask somebody about what their beliefs are, they usually tell me whether or not they're a conservative or a liberal.
And if I'm like, okay, give me some more beliefs, and then they'll tell you maybe if they're religious or not.
And if I'm like, okay, give me some more beliefs, then they just peter out.
