I'll give you a second to think about it.
it was gold.
And it was the highest return of all returns over the last 10 years.
And it was up a whopping 64%.
And so when you look at the years and it goes small cap, then emerging markets, then agribonds, then value stocks, then growth stocks, then REITs, then commodities, then growth stocks, then growth stocks, and then gold, you realize there's like absolutely no pattern as to which asset class is the best performing.
And you might be listening to that and going, oh, Sim, like that's a little bit stressful.
I can't guess what's going to do well, but surely I can guess what's going to do poorly and at least make sure I'm not losing out.
Like I'm going to, you know, try and hedge my bets.
Now we're going to take a little break, but I'll be back with more very soon.
And now back to the episode.
Now in chapter two, let's run through the worst performing asset classes over the last decade and see if you can get any of these right.
So in 2016, it was bonds.
Bonds only returned 2%.
In 2017, it was TIPS.
And TIPS are Treasury Inflation Protected Securities, which are basically just like government bonds.
So 2016 were aggregate bonds.
2017 was government bonds that returned a minus 3%, worst performing.
2018 was emerging markets at minus 15%, which is why when people say emerging markets are the best thing ever, I always say, I just don't know about that.
And then 2019 was tips again.
So again, bonds only returned 8%.
