Let's keep buying growth stocks.
Down 29% in 2022.
Emerging markets were up 31% in 2017 and down 15% literally a year later in 2018.
And commodities were up 24% in 2022 and then down 9% in 2023.
That's
It's almost funny in the way that you can invest in something and be like, I am just like so smart.
I'm doing my research.
But I guess they're not wrong when they say past performance is not a guarantee of future success.
Like you will always catch me saying that and kind of like sometimes rolling my eyes when I say it because I'm like, yeah, we know, da, da, da.
But I guess it's like genuinely true.
If you look at past performance and go, well, last year, this did really well.
Therefore, next year, it must do really well as well.
You will end up losing so much of your investments that you'll probably be
put off it forever.
And I'm sure there are probably a lot of people that invest that way where they're just basing it off what's happened in the past instead of doing what we know to be like true and to be more of a
safer strategy, even though there's no strategy that's completely risk-free, dollar cost averaging, buying broad market index funds, having a diversified portfolio of shares and bonds and commodities and precious metals.
That's probably the safest bet across all the different strategies because even just looking at past performance, it doesn't really help.
Now, the second trend that I noticed that was like more surprising to me than anything else is that bonds have had a really bad decade.
Like 2022 was such a rough year.
Stocks were down.
