Now, the things that did not work in my favor when it came to FIRE, the first was that
Day-to-day budgeting was not something that I could keep up with.
I did it at the start of the journey and I was so diligent with tracking every single dollar, every single thing.
And I think it worked for a while, but I realized that just by tracking my net worth, I could figure out, is my savings going up or is it going down?
Are my investments going up or are they going down?
It didn't really make a difference to like track the $7 coffee I had or track the like dinner I went out with my friends.
And if anything, it would just make me really sad.
And I was just being like kind of in a slump.
And you can't live 10, 20, 30 years in a slump because you're like putting into your tracking device, like didn't realize I was going to go out for dinner and like have a drink with my friends, like $50.
Oh, I hate myself.
You know, like that's just not...
conducive to a happy life and it is not sustainable.
So anything that wasn't sustainable to fire, I had to let go of.
The other thing that did not work for me when it came to fire was giving myself a hard timeline.
I kind of pushed out fire by
an entire decade compared to what I wanted.
I think deep down, I always knew I wanted to fire by 30, but I kept publicly and personally saying by 40, I'd like to retire by 40.
And to be honest, I'd like to not have any job at all by 40 and not have to be interested in building.
But
By pushing out the FIRE number to 40, I was not putting so much pressure on myself.
