If you plot on a graph levels of obesity on one axis, time on the other, you can see pretty clearly that although the line goes up steadily from the early 90s,
By 2005 it's levelling off and more recently it's actually been going down.
So we got in touch this week with Clint McPherson again and asked whether anyone should still be quoting his old figures.
No, because the 2007 report was based on data up to 2005.
We now have data up to 2010.
And what we notice with the more recent data is that things are changing.
They're changing particularly among the young but also slightly amongst older people.
So what we predicted in 2007, based on data post-2005, should have been amended.
Watch for the publication which we are now preparing, which changes the numbers in the light of new data, and then stick to those numbers.
He does.
He told us he now thinks that by 2050, 70% of women over 40 and 85% of men over 40 will be overweight or obese.
But of course, as before, that all depends on things carrying on, as they have been for the next few decades, and of course they may not.
But interestingly, he does say that for men under 40s, for example, they could actually be getting thinner.
Younger people are different from older people because the evidence suggests that they are
flattening at least and in some cases going down.
In other words, the proportion of people who are overweight and obese is decreasing slightly amongst younger men and going flat for young women.
