where you have a military that is all volunteer, you find overall generally lower rates.
So let's look at the British Armed Forces, where we know the rates quite well.
We find that overall they have really quite a substantially lower risk of suicide than people who are not in the armed forces.
And that's probably because they get selected.
So they're fitter, they're healthier, and of course they have a job.
And given that unemployment is a massive risk factor for suicide anyway, the mere fact of having a job already puts you into what's called the healthy worker effect.
You are more healthy than those not at work.
