And being a carer, actually, that was a key thing, being

carer.

Because I cared for my mum, cared for my gran, cared for my son.

And they said, no one's talked about it before in the way you have.

I'm sure they had, but people hadn't heard that.

And that just encouraged us and said, well, we probably need to speak out more about it.

And so it was a sort of, almost a dialogue with people out there, encouraging us to talk about it.

And I have to say it wasn't, initially it was not easy.

Did it feel a bit exposing initially?

Oh gosh, yeah.

I mean, there was the film we made during the election, our party election broadcast where I talked to my son.

Like everything, we shot 20 hours and it was

half minutes.

So I got to talk a lot about my childhood and John and began to get more comfortable and partly because I could see it mattered to other people.

I almost felt, I don't want to be sanctimonious about it, I felt an obligation to talk about it.

and the more i realized the issues that that around care and carers the more i thought it was actually quite important in our country's life in our society and it's sort of overlooked and is never in the political debate so yeah i i felt i feel comfortable about talking about it now i've got across the rubicon you know

it is i mean it's if you're up for it

and you know i'm very privileged to have this platform as a politician a leader party and um therefore um you have a ability to reach a wider audience and if you can help people even just from what you're saying well what why not why not and uh i mean the writing the book was another sort of rubicon really because although um i

I remember part of it I had to cast my mind back you know so
