She made cakes.
She was a brilliant cook.
She helped everybody in the community.
When people came over from Jamaica, mum was the one they went to and she could sort out if you wanted to get married, where to get married.
She could make a wedding dress.
She could make you a wedding cake.
And she was kind of community glue, my mum.
So she had a generosity of spirit and this work ethic that meant something to me.

He wasn't violent.
I mean, he was very angry with my mum, but he never hit us.
I remember this one day when I thought I was going to get major league hiding.
I don't know what it was, but it was the summer.
It was really hot.
And I would run in, I would drink water.
And I'd, you know, counsel pop.
I'd drink the tap water.
